Quick Report: Cluj hold Chelsea, Roma claim win
CLUJ-NAPOCA (SW) - CFR Cluj's fine Champions League debut continued Wednesday in Group A with a goalless draw against Chelsea, and Roma got off the mark with a victory at Bordeaux.
CFR Cluj 0-0 Chelsea
An inspired Cluj side arguably was the better side for most of the first half against heavily-favored Chelsea, and they nearly went in front on 36 minutes when Alvaro Pereira just missed wide.
Chelsea picked up the pace in the second half, but lost striker Didier Drogba to injury in the 58th minute after he got his studs caught in the ground, forcing the Ivorian to be carted off.
Chelsea continued to pile on the pressure, but Cluj's defense held firm, and the Romanians nearly stole the points through Pereira, but Petr Cech did well to keep the scoreboard blank.
Bordeaux 1-2 AS Roma
After a dreadful Matchday 1 performance, Bordeaux started strong with Yoann Gourcuff beat Roma goalkeeper Doni in the 18th for a 1-0 lead, but they would be down to 10 men in the 36th minute after Henrique's foolish elbow on Cicinho.
Roma, disappointed from a home loss to Cluj last time out, equalized in the 64th minute when Montenegro striker Mirko Vucinic headed home Daniele De Rossi's cross.
The Italians snatched victory just seven minutes later, JĂșlio Baptista finding the back of the net with a sublime free kick after being felled by Franck Jurietti.
